Britain suspends extradition agreement with Hong Kong to bring Hong Kong under arms embargo

The United Kingdom announced an immediate and indefinite suspension of the extradition agreement with Hong Kong and included Hong Kong in the scope of the arms embargo.

Foreign Minister LAN Taowen pointed out that Beijing’s implementation of the port national security law in Hong Kong was in violation of the Sino British Joint Declaration and international obligations, and said that unless there are clear and effective safeguards to prevent the abuse of the extradition agreement due to the port national security law, the British side will not consider restarting the relevant arrangements.

Australia and Canada suspended extradition agreements with Hong Kong earlier this month, while US President trump earlier decided to suspend the granting of special trade treatment to Hong Kong.

In Beijing, the foreign ministry pointed out that the British side’s recent remarks and practices concerning Hong Kong were all wrong. It strongly condemned this and reiterated that China must “resolutely fight back” its interference in China’s internal affairs.
